This is my first foray into Bivy-sack world. This bivy worked great for winter camping, as it was small and light and very warm. But I am not sure how well it would work for greater than 3 days as it has major condensation difficulties, even when left mostly unzipped, in a light breeze (beachside camping). Still, the vapor-barrier effect rocked for cold winter nights, and my synthetic bag was only superficially frozen-up and still had some loft. I keep the delrin rod slid into the frame-stay slots on my pack, which works well for keeping it stretched-out and out-of-the-way while carrying it.
Verdict: Best bang for the buck I could find (including scouring ebay). Rocks for cold sleepers! Not good for long trips, and if you're more than a couple months on either side of winter, you're probably better off with a tarp and a bug net.
So, Plusses:
+very light, very small (compared to a tent)
+cheap! (I paid $55)
+welded construction, sturdy zipper, seems pretty rugged overall
+fast and simple (sometimes tent poles and stakes can be pretty downer with frozen fingers or heavy rainstorms)
Minuses:
- No bug netting!
-Serious condensation issues (and the vent is kindof a joke)
- Delrin rod only so-so effective
OK inexpensive bivy November 20, 2008 R. Norton (Illinois) 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
This is an OK bivy for the price. The Delrin Hoop Frame that holds the bivy away from your face is more or less a joke. Its a plastic rod that is impossible to put into any other shape other than the twisted loop it arrives in in the package. I broke mine trying to get it to loosen up a little bit. Its not necessary anyway. I haven't used mine in any seriously bad weather yet. When I do I'll update this.
