Product Description
Kelty's Gunnison 3.1 3-Person 3-Season Tent loves anything from starlit summer evenings to wet autumn backpacking trips. Kelty placed the Gunnison's mesh panels strategically, providing ventilation, decreased condensation, which keeps you from feeling like you're spending the night in a cave. Even in the dark, it's easy to secure the aluminum DAC Pressfit poles to the individual clips for set-up, and the Swivel Hub System increases stability and ease of set up. Configured with two doors and two vestibules, the Gunnison 3.1 Tent's floorplan maximizes the available living space. Other features include taped seams to keep water out and internal storage pockets to help organize essentials. Kelty also added a gear loft, putting your treats, iPod, or prophylactics close at hand while you stargaze.

Amazon.com Product Description
Redesigned with improved features, the Kelty Gunnison 3.1 freestanding tent offers quick, two-pole setup and spacious quarters for two. Weighing just under 6 pounds, the three-season Gunnison 3.1 provides 48 square feet of floor area as well as over 20 square feet from the dual vestibule areas (9.9 + 9.9)--great for storing gear and wet, muddy boots and clothing. The tent features extensive mesh at the top as well as two doors and a lower mesh vent for an aerodynamic venting system to regulate temperature and reduce condensation. Other features include internal storage pockets, side-release buckle tent-fly connection, noiseless zipper pulls that resist jingling when it's windy, and color-coded clip construction with DAC Featherlite NSL poles.

Computer designed and tested, Featherlite NSL poles are specifically engineered for use in lightweight tents where strength is critical. A "tapered" end of the pole has a smaller diameter that allows it to slide into the larger pole end. This system reduces the overall weight of a pole 12-18 percent, depending on pole and section size. The clip construction provides great fly separation and increased air movement, and it makes it easier to set-up your tent but offers less strength than full-length sleeves. The clips connecting the poles to the tent are color-coded so set-up is easy and quick in low light conditions.

Kelty's ArcEdge construction lifts floor seams up off the ground, preventing water seepage around the floor and wall seams. Taped seams on the floor and the rainfly ensure that the tent is protected from moisture and wet weather. The ITW LineLoc guyline adjuster, a Ladderloc for cord, creates an easy way to adjust and keep cord taut. It functions just like a standard Ladderloc would on webbing--pull the cord to tighten, lift the ergonomically designed thumb tab to release. The newly designed DAC Jake's Foot stakeouts make tent set-up quicker and puts less stress on your tent poles.

5 out of 5 stars I like it   December 3, 2009

I got my gunnison a few weeks ago and have mixed emotions. I ended up getting the 3.1 for a little extra room and paid $199 on amazon with free shipping. As always with kelty, quality materials. However, the fastening mechanisms are all plastic and are specialty parts. I don't know how a plastic bottle can survive 1000 years in a landfill but a plastic clip cannot survive more then a few years on a compression sac. New out of the box all the fasteners are great, the ends of the all aluminum poles have a ball that locks into the clip on the tent making set up much easier. But some day those things will break, and I won't be able to stop at the local store and buy a new one (I have built/repaired LOTS of equipment from Jo Ann Fabrics). My other problem is the floor seems very thin and my other kelty footprints are the same material. I always worry about a puncture, so with this tent I use a $4.99 blue tarp (almost big enough) for a little bit of meat underneath. Hopefully my conserns are all for not and my tent will give me many years of pleasure. Thats really my only negative, the positives are many. Our first night it poured for about four hours and not a drop of water in our tent. The double door/vestibules are great, one side to enter and the other just big enough for two packs. The tent is relatively light, comes with aluminum poles, easy set up, plenty of room, looks good, everything I need at a reasonable price. I'm sure there are better tents, but this one is a great value.

Very good quality for this price. I shopped all of the big box stores and was unable to find this quality or this model (once I had settled on a Kelty). Mine arrived missing one of the loops for the gear loft. Disappointing but not a deal breaker.

5 out of 5 stars What a pleasant surprise!   October 5, 2009

I was looking for the elusive middle ground of a roomy 2-3 person tent for canoe camping. It didn't need to be backpacker micro-lite but couldn't be a car camping dome style monstrosity, either. I also needed it to be freestanding, because gravel bars and sandy beaches aren't always great places for tents that require staking to remain up. I also was not looking to send a bunch of money, so I shopped the tried and true manufacturers of "real" (that is, not sporting goods store) tents, including Kelty.

Given the reasonable price my expectations weren't that high. Heck, I spent this much on a backpacking tent nearly two decades ago! So, imagine my pleasant surprise when I got an attractive tent with one of the fastest, most intuitive setups of any tent I've ever had. It is also honestly sized. You really could sleep three adults in it easily, and for two adults with some gear (or a dog) it actually works and works well. Also, it is extremely well vented (lots of screen) but with a full to-the-ground rainfly, so without the fly it could be used on a warm summer night and on a cold excursion the fly traps a bit of heat. A true three-season tent in my opinion.

Longevity and durability are obviously something to see over time, but I have no reason right now to expect problems (and will post if I do).

4 out of 5 stars Great little tent.   August 17, 2009

Nice tent and easy to set up. I had trouble trying to get the rainfly to line up with the seems and poles, so it would start to ride up on one side. It's a minor annoyance and I would recommend the tent to anyone else. Definitely more suited for two people than three.

5 out of 5 stars Great Boy Scout Tent   June 2, 2009

We are a Boy Scout Troop that does a lot of backpacking and camping in the Blue Ridge Mountains of SC and NC. We have some older Kelty tents that have held up great through all of the abuse a group of teenage boys can put out, so we're very pleased with the brand. The features of the Gunnison were the best in the price range. We've had them out a couple of times and are happy with the room, weight and design of the tents. Especially the 2 door design and the large vestibules. We're expecting years of service from them. Will definitely buy again as we need more tents.
