Product Description
A no-frills option for first-time campers or cost-conscious backpackers, the Therm-a-Rest Trail sleeping pad offers self-inflating comfort and convenience at an affordable price. An expandable foam core provides the self-inflating Trail with an R-value of 3.4 and makes the pad incredibly easy to use. Simply unroll the pad and open the valve. Open-celled foam responds by soaking up air, similar to the way in which a sponge absorbs liquid. Once the Trail has had time to inflate, you can adjust firmness by manually adding or releasing air before re-tightening the valve. The Therm-a-Rest Trail sleeping pad is available in four sizes. The Small measures 20" x 47", the Med measures 20" x 66", the Reg measures 20" x 72" and the Large measures a full 25" x 77". A Trail Stuff Sack (sold separately) aids in packability and provides water-resistant protection.

3 out of 5 stars Not the Therma-Rest of the 1970s   June 5, 2010
R. Buch (Louisville, KY)
I had a great Therma-rest sleeping pad for 20+ years. Orange fabric cover, about 4 ft long, small metal valve, slowly inflated on its own or I could blow it up if I was impatient. When it finally quit holding air, there was no question as to what type of pad I'd replace it with.

However, this Therma-rest is disappointing. The green plastic/rubber cover sticks to your skin, inflation is more time-consuming because this pad is longer and thicker than the old model, and even though it is longer and thicker it does not provide the firm comfort of the old Therma-rest. With the old Therma-rest, a pebble or small stick underneath the pad was undetectible. Even though I inflated the new pad as much as was not painful to my mouth, the ground contours under the pad were still highly evident.

2 out of 5 stars My matress has a huge hump   March 1, 2010

The first trip where I took my mattress was the trip to the Indonesian jungle. The weather was hot (but not hotter than 38 degrees Celsius) and in a few days the mattress blew up with several huge bubbles. I guess, the material stretched unevenly under the heat. Now I can still inflate it, but it is impossible to sleep on. There's a high hump filled with air in the center of the mattress.

I realized I was getting old when we went camping and my sleeping bag was no longer enough to make a comfortable night sleep outside. So, I purchased this product. It's made a huge difference. I have to admit, it hasn't made me ache-free in the morning after sleeping on it, but this is more my fault than the thermarest's. In order to have that, I'd need to upgrade to a full air mattress, which would limit us to only car camping. This thermarest gives a bit of padding for very little weight and bulk. Well worth the investment if your bones need a bit more padding than a sleeping bag offers!

1 out of 5 stars not worth the money   October 13, 2009

I purchased this mat for a trip in which I would be sleeping on the floor of a hut for approx 4 weeks. Within the first week the mat developed a hole, which I tried to repair with duct tape to no avail. Thus the mat never stayed inflated and was useless for the rest of the trip. I only continued using it to keep my body from being completely on the ground, and to have something to tuck the edges of my mosquito net under. I left it for with the natives I was staying with. Perhaps they'll put it to better use than I ever did.
