3 out of 5 stars "I'll tell you what it isn't .... " [Blythe, the "Forger"]   November 28, 2008

This "6 in 1" gadget reminds me of the classic line in "The Great Escape" [1963] when the "Scrounger" Henley [James Garner] offers Blythe the "Forger" [Donald Pleasence] a taste of that POW camp home-brew stuff [you know, for the July 4th celebration] and Blythe, after tasting same, makes with, "I'll tell you what it isn't .. it isn't Napoleon brandy!" Well, this gadget "isn't" a Suunto! But then, hey, what's to be expected for $25.95!

I must also agree with the last reviewer about the 'directions' [which the reviewer relegated to perhaps being better left in the original Chinese [for all the good the directions were .. and I agree forthwith!] and then a sort of 'pig Latin' translation therein] but my own choice would be Sanskrit if only in the sense of being even 'more' obscure than Chinese! Whew! Anyway, and in all fairness, the plus side is that the time, temperature, barometer and compass are decent enough [what, you're heading out for Everest or K2 this week for a winter assault attempt once you acclimatize?] but forget the altimeter. The readings can vary up to 400 feet! And thensome! Plus and minus either way! Just this week I did a local jaunt, 1680 feet [as verified with a Brunton and published topographical info] and I must say the gadget was "consistent", ohhh yes, it read "232(Ft)" [!] the whole time! Bottom, mid-way and 'bump' summit! Useless! It's a no-name gadget to begin with and this tells you something right there.

BTW, and just as a tip, if you're looking for something of a multi-function nature but don't want to go the wrist-watch route for altimeter [et al] info, check out various of those multi-function digital gadgets that use a mini "biner" [pronounced 'beaner' -- get this and spotted on one website and I kid you not: "A carabiner? Why would a "rifle" [!] be necessary?" ] clip-on to your belt loop or jacket. But even here, read the reviews first! Altimeter readings, and if this is important to you in terms of accuracy, even of the relatively close [within 3 to 6 feet accuracy] variety, well, what was the line of the guy in the flick "Hustle and Flow" in re the 'studio quality' microphone , to wit, "If you want quality, you have to pay for it."

But still, $25 for the time, baro, temp and at least 'rough' digital compass, hey, you can't beat the price. Just forget it when it comes to altimeter readings which varies even if the gadget location doesn't move! Yeah, I know, some altimeters "get into gear" after 1,000 feet ... but not this one. But then too, Christmas is just around the corner so convince your opposite number that a multi-function Suunto [et al of the better quality brands especially when it comes to altimeter readings ] would be a great gift and don't forget to use the ol' classic of "and it's a great sale price too!" thing!

PS -- I forgot to add on this 6 in 1 gizmo -- the time is 'only' available in the 24 hour format! Not the 12 hour AM/PM thing. Brings me back to my military years but those who find the time rendered as "16:45" and have to do the momentary calculation drill to get 4:45PM out of that, well, this gizmo only does the 24 hour format -- the why of which escapes me. It will however convert the temp to Fahrenheit and the altimeter [useless as it is] to feet but the time remains in the 24 hour format unless I missed something in that Sanskrit-like "directions."

PS#2 -- The short version directions for the gizmo. Hold down the MODE button for at least 5 seconds and release -- the HOUR will begin to blink, then use the SET button to set the hour [** remember, this is a 24 hour format so there is no AM/PM indication!]. After setting the hour, press the MODE button again but 'quickly' so and the MINUTE will begin flashing. Use the SET button to do the minutes. That's it. This gizmo is designed to then return to 'normal' after 30 seconds on 'each' look-see when you check the alt/baro/temp/compass ==or== you keep pressing MODE quickly to get the reading you want when it will display for 30 seconds and then return to the time default. The rest of the stuff is automatic and mercifully the Fahrenheit degrees are displayed for the temperature [if you want Celsius, hold down the MODE and it should switch] but Fahrenheit is the default as is 'feet' for the [otherwise useless] altimeter. If you want meters, do the MODE 'hold' thing. The barometer takes care of itself in its "hPa" millibar setting and unless you're into "magnetic declination variation" tinkerings, leave the "calibrated before leaving factory" [sic] compass alone or you may throw it off more than it already is! Take your old non digital compass and do a comparison check and if it's close, leave it! It will vary [in degrees] on its own in any event. If you foul the settings up royally and the gizmo becomes a sudden mash of numbers, grab the eyeglasses phillips screwdriver [for that recessed screw] and take out the CR2032 battery [don't lose that very tiny screw that holds the battery cover in place!] and the gizmo will return to 'normal' when you reinsert the battery. You can then repeat the cut-to-the-chase directions process indicated above.

While I agree with the other Reviewers that it keeps time and temperature (sort of), it's not very intuitive and the included instructions would have been more useful if printed in the original chinese as they are apparently literal translations of the chinese into pig latin.....you get only a very general sense of how it should work, but even the simple tasks of changing from metric to SAE or from 24 hr clock to standard clock format is an annoying exercise in trial and error (mostly error). Had I known the instructions/controls were so poor I wouldn't have ordered it as I have yet to get reliable readings: it's like Christmas..... "Gee push a button and see what you get this time!"

Effectively, it will tell the time, the temperature, and give reasonable compass bearings. It will approximate the altitude within about a hundred feet or so. But as to any hint of weather forecasting, certainly not. For "quick-and-dirty" orientation in the field, this device--at its modest price--is worthwhile. But it will not provide results anywhere near akin to similar functions in a basic GPS unit.

Nifty little gadget for the price. It isn't anything fancy, and it's not super accurate and super easy to figure out, but for what it costs, it does the trick.
