This is still the gold standard for learning how to use a map and compass. Have used this to teach orienteering skills to my kids and still keep it close to hand as a reference and resource.
No matter the level of experience, I recommend this book.

What a great book. Super resource.I was doing cross country the first day with 100% accuracy. I now can use my compass and maps with real accuracy. I will not get lost using these simple methods. Great value for the price. Can't recommend it enough a must have.

I thought this book would help me use GPS with a map when I'm in the wilderness. But there's almost nothing about GPS in this book and what is there just tells you that GPS isn't useful for orienteering.

I first learned to use a map and compass for land navigation while I was in the army. This book is a simpler, clearer amd much less military method to learn. Clear concise language will get you to understand what you need to know to avoid getting lost in the woods and in staying found.
