Amazon.com Product Description A bright, non-glaring, soup-can sized backcountry lantern with foldable legs and NRG rechargeable battery compatibility, the Black Diamond Apollo lantern is equipped to illuminate all of your nighttime camping activities such as cooking, reading in the tent, or playing a three-hour, no-mercy game of Rummy 500. The Apollo's frosted globe combined with its inset 3-watt LED, eliminates glare while the dual reflectors capture and maximize light output, casting off illumination to brightly fill a four-person tent. A unique dimming switch provides adjustable brightness, and the distinctive fold-down legs increase the Apollo's height to 9.5 inches, boosting light dispersion. The lantern runs on 4 AA alkalines as well as Black Diamond's NRG Rechargeable Battery Kit, and it has a handy battery power indicator with green, yellow or red LEDs that display either the amount of battery power left or the charging status of the NRG. Specifications: - Battery life: Up to 60 hours
- Weight: 11 ounces
- Dimensions: 5.2 x 3 inches
- Light intensity: 50 lumen output to illuminate a 20 meter diameter
- Power: 4 AA batteries or Black Diamond NRG Rechargeable Battery Kit
Product Description A bright, non-glaring, soup-can sized backcountry lantern with foldable legs and NRG rechargeable battery compatibility, the Apollo is equipped to illuminate all of your nighttime camping activities such as cooking, reading in the tent, or playing a three-hour, no-mercy game of Rummy 500. The Apollos frosted globe combined with its inset 3-watt LED, eliminates glare while the dual reflectors capture and maximize light output, casting off illumination to brightly fill a four-person tent. A unique dimming switch provides adjustable brightness, and the distinctive fold-down legs increase the Apollos height to 9.5 inches (24.1 cm), boosting light dispersion. A must buy! February 22, 2010 M. Berkenpas (Culver City, CA) The lantern was everything that I wanted. Compact, bright, rugged. The dimming feature will be great when we use the lantern inside the tent, since not as much light will be necessary. The tri-pod is great as well. It looks much better than other lanterns I've seen, and my buddies were impressed with the performance. Plus, this was a great price on the product.
One of those "simply perfect" products February 6, 2010 Simon (North Carolina, USA) I'm one of those folks that usually sees the flaws in just about everything and finds themselves disappointed by products that they by. Every now and then I come across something that just seems close to perfect. The BD Apollo is one such product.
Very well built.
Ergonomics are superb (on switch protected by sliding dome to avoid accidental activation, legs or D ring give endless mounting options, 4xAA which are rarely hard to find and a push and hold dimmer that just makes perfect sense when you use it. Legs folding up etc with the sliding cowel down and it all feels very secure for travel.
I've used it camping on high and it has plenty enough "round the table" brightness and I've used it overnight as a nightlight for the kids sleeping on our boat to minimize use of the house bank and it gives plenty of light for seemingly days on low.
I've avoided the NRG kit partly because I am put off by older gen NiMH batteries because of the high self discharge rate. Using 2000mAh Eneloop NiMH (newer gen low self discharge) AAs works OK, but with NiMH the light dropped out of regulated high after around six hours.
I bought another for an elderly relative that was using candles when the power went out and would buy more in a heartbeat - love it.
I did also try the larger size version that uses D cells. Good brightness and run-time, but much physically bigger and with no legs - wonder why they did that?
Personally, I think the Apollo is the perfect size and would recommend to anyone!
Best lantern I own! January 4, 2010 Adam Murray (Utah) It's tiny (about the size of a soup can), lightweight, it looks awesome, and it gives off great light. It has a dimmer and works perfectly as a nightlight for the kids. Every time I go camping or backpacking everyone is jealous of this light:)
Just get one already. December 19, 2009 Pearson 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Ok so everyone on the planet likes the orbit. The Apollo is better. Those legs are really handy. If your out on flat ground they give the light a much longer throw without searching around for a rock or something. The light that it puts out is, as everyone says, easy on the eyes. Our den is about 30 by 15 and if the lights go out this light is enough to keep the boogy man away. Its not much bigger than the orbit and is a lot brighter. Ok so it is a little heavier. That's fine I'll skimp on something else. Do I really need that toothbrush? :-) Both lights cover the switch when closed which is really smart. I don't think you will be disappointed. P.S. I own several little lanterns of various types, and this is the one I reach for every time.
Exactly what I was looking for - New High Power LEDs November 10, 2009 Shawn Sapp (Denver, CO United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I love this lantern. I bought it for camping, but have found a hundred other uses for it around the house. I typically use NiMH rechargeable batteries and dim it to half power for most uses, but good to have the higher power for when you need it. I'm glad I got the 3W LED model instead of the 1W LED model. I'm tempted to buy another one because it has been so useful, I'd like to keep one in my truck.
