Product Description
Mountain House freeze-dried foods are packed in airtight Nitrogen Packed #10 cans. Up to 98% of the residual oxygen has been removed. Their unique canning process uses both vacuum oxygen removal and nitrogen flushing. This is a time consuming and slightl

5 out of 5 stars Hardtack   March 11, 2010

There are other "Pilot Breads" out there, and the most popular is a little bit tastier. However, the packaging here is primo, this stuff is good for a loooooong time.

I would not buy the Mountain House Pilot Bread for general eating. Buy it for emergency/earthquake or survival food. I know some suggest hard red wheat and honey. What the heck are you gonna do with a 55gallon drum of hard red wheat? It has to be ground and then cooked... and generally, if you are in an emergency sitrep, your power and gas is out too, so it's gonna be hard to cook.

Get this instead, along with some peanut butter (and Ok, if you like honey, get some of that, why not?) and plenty of water. No cooking, it's not bad tasting at all, and most kids will have no problem with it.

4 out of 5 stars O Pilot Bread, My Pilot Bread   December 8, 2009

I started to be interested in pilot bread when I read the Wikipedia article on hardtack, which pilot bread is a direct descendant of, and even made my own, which was just as hard and inedible as the famed toothbreakers. Then I heard that its modern variant was still commercially available, although mostly in Alaska and Hawaii. *Then* I realized that it was also available through this here fine purveyor of shipped goods, albeit under the confusing alias of "Granola W/Milk & Blueberry Can". (Seriously, WTF.) Nonetheless, I was pleased to find that it was pretty much as S.T. described, and all around a decent substitute for regular crackers for those of us that want an alternative to saltines.

The only real problem that I have with it is that 2 pounds of crackers is an awful lot to go through before they go stale. The crackers are in three cardboard trays inside the big can, and Mountain House would be well-advised to wrap the trays separately for those of us who don't have an entire family to feed. That having been said, these are OK, and probably lots better than what your average Johnny Reb or Billy Yank enjoyed before a busy day's slaughtering at Shiloh.

Mountain House stuff is the best I have found in emergency and long-storage foods. I had never tried these and was afraid they would taste like cardboard - but was pleasantly surprised. The flavor reminds me of town house crackers. They are like thick round crackers but not salty. In fact, they have a slight sweet taste but it's barely noticable. Good with deviled ham, cheese, butter, peanut butter, jelly, etc. They go well with most meals, IMHO, but I prefer something salty with some dishes, like chili. Excellent addition to emergency foods.

I bought these for long term storage, so I can review the brand and say I am always happy with Mountain House and I will eat this product in the year 2020.
