Product Description SteriPEN Adventurer, The Steripen Adventure UV Water Purifier is even lighter and more compact than the original Steripen. The Steripen Adventure is built for the outdoors and can withstand more abuse than it's sibling. A hard rubber outer shell and lid help protect the Adventure from damage in case it's dropped. The Adventure is even lighter and more compact also making it an ideal purifier for backpacking and travel. Same great function, smaller design! Also check out the Solar Charger/Carrying case! - Weight: 4 oz (110g) - Purification time: 16 oz in 48 seconds. 1 liter in 90 seconds - Includes two disposable CR123 batteries - Requires two CR123 batteries to operate - One year warranty - Destroys Giardia and Cryptosporidium - Kills 99.9999% of bacteria such as Salmonella and E. coli - Eliminates over 99.99% of viruses such as hepatitis and poliovirus - Meets U.S. E.P.A. Guide Standard and Protocol for Testing Microbiological - Bulb life: 8,000 uses, Mfg No: AD-RP, Manufacturer: SteriPEN
Product Description Great for hiking and camping, this handheld water purifier destroys viruses, bacteria, and common protozoa. It weighs just 3.6 ounces with two non-rechargeable, disposable batteries (included) and purifies 16 ounces of water in 48 seconds, or 32 ounces in 90 seconds. The purifier employs ultraviolet light (UV) to destroy the DNA of microorganisms, making them unable to reproduce and cause illness. It's effective against outdoor microbes like giardia and cryptosporidium; pathogens that cause diarrhea, dysentery, hepatitis, and Legionnaire's Disease; household germs such as bird flu, E. coli, and salmonella; staph and strep; and natural-disaster risks like botulism, cholera, smallpox, and typhoid. No pumping, no chemicals, no test strips, no timekeeping, no lubricating, and no replacement filters are required. All that is required is to push the water purifier's button (once for 32 ounces, twice for 16 ounces), place the pen-like lamp in clear water, and stir until an indicator light turns green. Water has no aftertaste after being purified. Measuring 6.1 inches long, the purifier comes with a nylon case and a user's guide. It exceeds U.S. Environmental Protection Agency guidelines for testing microbiological water purifiers.

great little travel tool March 10, 2010 Yvette Stanton (Sydney, Australia) We bought one of these for our family trip to Ethiopia. It was small and lightweight, which we needed it to be, as part of our trip involved taking minimal luggage.
We used the Steripen in our wide-mouthed water bottles, and it was great. I always seemed a bit dubious about whether its coloured light was really going to do anything, but we were ok, so it must have! Because of that, it gave us piece of mind that we weren't drinking any nasties that might have horrible effects on us. We used it morning and night, every day for two weeks.
We kept it in its little pouch, and folded the instructions down to shove in with it. I felt better about having the instructions with us, in case anything strange happened with it. Once or twice it behaved differently than what I expected, so I was able to use the instructions to help me figure out what it meant.
I'd highly recommend it to travellers. My only slightly negative comment is that it chewed through the batteries. I would consider getting one of the solar-powered chargers for it if we were going anywhere where we might need it again. But then that would add weight...
SteriPen adventurer handheld water purifier October 13, 2009 Debie Zamonis 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The product was shipped on time and ready to use. We were on our way to do a big hike and took it with us. It was easy to use to purify the water and no one got sick or the runs. The only thing you have to know is that the element used to purify does not fit in a small mouth bottle. The opening has to be at least 2 inches. Luckly we figured that out before we used it and took an adequate size bottle with us.
Great Product September 30, 2009 RLB (Rhode Island) I toiled over getting a purification pump or the SteriPen and filter combo for my trip to the Appalachian Trail with my Boy Scout Troop. I chose the SteriPen because it also kills viruses (the deciding factor). It worked great. It is light and compact. About one minute to fill a liter bottle with the filter then 90 seconds to sterilize. Worked great for the group. Only wish it came with a lanyard so you don't drop it in the bottle.

Get the one that uses rechargeable AA batteries if you go anywhere off the beaten path (eg. Third World countries) at all. You can't find the CR123A batteries this one uses outside of major cities there, and sometimes not even then.
A great hiking companion August 24, 2009 BODE (Durango, CO USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
My wife and I do backcountry hiking in a local wilderness area here in Colorado and the water is mostly very clear. That is the most important consideration for the use of this UV purifier. If the water is cloudy or has much turbidity, it must be filtered thus defeating its major advantage: speed.
We have found that it works as advertises and have confidence that it is actually killing the pathogens. The buyer must read the instructions to understand its operation in order to put trust in its performance.
We carry two sources of water purification in case of battery failure or we break it. Tablets take more time but will also be the lightweight option if relying on the SteriPen as a primary source of water treatment. If there were more than two of us, we would use the MSR that pumps directly into the Nalgene one liter bottle. In two summers use we have been very satified with its features: speed, size and weight.
