2 out of 5 stars Poor Build Quality   March 20, 2010
Tom Sellers
Bought this when it was on at half price. Even then ended up returning it. The build quality is not of a very high standard. Out of the box we had many issues with leaks. Then the front control dial would only work at a couple of positions, so the product out of the box was not usable. Due to the obvious poor build quality rather than just return it for a replacement I could see that even if you get a fully functioning one, it may last you just long enough that you'll have a faulty unit after your warranty is up, not to mention the coast and hassle of dealing with warranty anyway, and believe me at some point wou will need to do so if you aquire this.

5 out of 5 stars This is a Great product!!!   December 8, 2009
J. Wright (White Lake, MI USA)
A group of us go deep into the woods every year. We use the Coleman Hot Water-on-Demand for showers and then tote it over to the Kitchen area to wash dishes. This one makes two, one for the shower and one for dishes. One tank of fuel lasts the whole 2 weeks. It's amazing how hot the water gets. Even when we aren't roughing it, it's nice to be able to do the dishes outside. It's also nice to have around the house during extended power outages. I would recommend this product.

3 out of 5 stars Coleman OK if you have lots of water to waste   November 17, 2009
S. Calkin (Colorado)

We have a yurt off grid and the thought of having a little hot water now and then, on demand, without piping up the stove seemed like a great luxury. I was excited to find the Coleman. In reality, it blew through the limited amount of water we had in just one day, leaving us to collect rain water off of our temporary roof...tarp. Not only does it use up a bunch of water, it doesn't give you hot water, it gives you warm water. So don't think you can make a cup of tea with this thing. Also, it had a hard time pumping the water at times and you had to squeeze the intake hose to create some suction to get it started. Having to hold the knob in the 'hot' position while you're rinsing dishes is a pain in the rear, and another waste of water. I have no idea why they designed it this way unless it's some sort of child safety feature. It's basically a fancy way to wash your hands. That's about it. I think I'll keep to heating up the 'ol stock pot until I find my perfect solution. I use way less water and it just works a lot better.

5 out of 5 stars Great cabin product - I adapted it for the rain barrel   October 4, 2009
Bill Isles (Duluth, MN)
We've had the coleman hot-water-on-demand unit for about four years, since we were building a cabin. While our cabin has power, we chose not to invest in a well and septic system. The county permitted us to have a privy and we set up a rain-water collection system which fills a 55 gallon barrel with less than a half inch of rainfall. We had been hauling water (from home) for the shower, but the 5 gallon bag is only good for about two showers. So when we got the rainbarrel, we started filling it right there next to the cabin. But, even that seemed a bit tedious. I bought Coleman's hose adapter, but it takes the place of the pump and assumes you have at least 4psi water pressure. That didn't work. So I went to our neighboorhood hardware store and bought a 3/4" theaded plastic adapter. 3/4" threads on one end, a short flange in the middle and a 1/2" hose fitting on the other. I carefully cut a 3/4" hole in the top of the bag (I stuck a 1" board in through the filler hole and drilled through the plastic using a 3/4" auger and the board for a backing so I didn't go all the way through. Then, I used two fingers to hold the nut in place inside the bag while I threaded in the plastic adapter. I was able to get it pretty tight. I could have used a sealer but it was for outside use so I didn't care about a little leak.
Then I ran a section of garden hose from one of the two rain barrel spigots and clamped it on the fitting. Opened the valve and the bag filled right up (slowly, of course). Now, I can just fill it on demand, or open the valve before a show and close it when done. It keeps it full. I also ran and extension cord over to the unit (which doubles as our kitchen sink faucet) so I can recharge the battery as needed. We leave it outside all summer. So, we have a table on our back deck with a plastic dish pan under the HOD spigot, and when we want to shower, we step next to that where I've mounted the shower head and plug that into the spigot. I might post a video (but not of an actual shower, ha ha).
