Amazon.com Product Description Harness your dog's pent-up energy to bring your pet supplies or extra gear to the campsite with the Pine Creek dog backpack. The backpack--which is actually a pair of saddlebags that rest over your dog's back--is made of a lightweight material with poly fleece inner surfaces, keeping your dog comfortable and the pack stable on extended trips and hikes. Your dog will enjoy additional comfort via the pack's breathable back panel, which eliminates hot spots and chaffing. And when you're on the trail, the pack holds quite a bit of gear, including dog bowls, food, waste bags, toiletries, extra socks, and other items. The gear is secured safely inside your bag thanks to the large zippered side pockets. The dog backpack--which includes an integrated ring that attaches to a leash--easily adjusts to provide a custom fit for your dog's shape. The pack is designed for dogs weighing between 40 and 90 pounds and fits girths up to roughly 34 to 35 inches. This backpack is not recommended for shorter breeds, such as Boxers. Good backpack, Good price March 6, 2010 Candice C. Thornburg I was very pleased by my backpack for my dog. It fit him well (he is a 95 lb Bullmastiff mix, named Knox). It seems well made, lots of places to adjust to help it fit well. Knox took right to it and seems to like having a job to do while on walks. I got it right on time. I was also happy about the price and free shipping! can't beat that. Knox and I are happy customers.
Very Pleased With This Backpack February 26, 2010 Teressa M. Edwards (NC) I purchased this backpack for my 70 lb German Shepherd who goes to work with me everyday. I wanted to give her a job to do, since I read that this breed loves to work. The minute she gets it on, she knows that she is in "work" mode. She walks with me to the mailbox at the office (approximately an 1/8th of a mile roundtrip)and carries mail back, and she is allowed to go into the company bank with me carrying the deposit bag in her pack. I also plan to have her carry water bottles, clean-up bags, and other supplies when I go to visit my daughter at her college in the mountains and hike on the trails. The pack is easy to adjust for the perfect fit, and my dog doesn't mind having it on at all. I am very pleased!
great value February 21, 2010 M. Newlin This backpack has worked out well for my 75lb. lab mix. It was one of the most reasonably priced dog backpacks I could find. It also lives up to the name "Easy Fit" as it was simple to put on my dog and adjust so it fit well. I can put 3 or 4 water bottles in each pocket of the backpack and the material is nice and sturdy.
Easy to use and comfortable for dog... February 4, 2010 Educ8NC This pack is well made, the underside is lined with a fleece type material that is soft against the dog. The one that I received happens to be a nice shade of blue, there was no color selection process and I have a male dog so I hoped for a neutral non-feminine color. I haven't noticed any rubbing, but so far we have only gone on 45 minute hikes with the pack. The side bags zip almost all the way around, so you can open it wide for inserting larger objects. It is easy to put on and to get off my puppy, who is a nine month old 65 lb lab/shepherd mix. Once you adjust the size you don't have to worry about it each time you put the pack on, you just buckle the strap that goes under the belly. The strap that goes around the front of the chest does not have a buckle system (it is adjustable, however), it is always in place, you just slide it over the dogs head and then buckle the belly strap closed.
If you would like to snap your leash to the pack rather than your dogs collar, there is a ring on the top back end of the pack. I have used a few different items to weight it down, the first walk we did w/o any weight. I have used hard cover novels, one on each side, and am now using cans of soup (2 per side). There is plenty of room in each side, I am basically using trial and error to see what works best for my dog. You could easily carry several bottles of water, your keys, phone, collapsible bowl, and snacks on a long hike with this pack.
As a side note, this has been great for my very active puppy. We have been through two sessions of obedience training so he is already responsive to many commands, our issues have been leash walking/pulling issues, that seemed to start as he got older and wanted to assert some independence. When this pack goes on, he is all business, he goes right to the door and stands with his nose against the door frame waiting patiently for me to leash him up and head out. I really wanted to avoid a training collar because so many people use them permanently and rely on them as a crutch. I was hoping this product would give me some results in focusing the dog on walks, using some of his energy, and also keeping him at a loose leash stance while walking. We have only been training with it for 4 days and I have to say from day 1 it has worked. He stays right at my left knee when walking and has only pulled when he sees another dog approaching. I'm looking forward to using the pack on hikes in a state park near our home as well as to continue with puppy training. I would highly recommend it as it is cheaper than most collars and serves dual purposes.
OK for lightweight applications January 25, 2010 R. Hiestand (Can't tell you... or else) The dog this is being used on is a lab/pointer mix. He's under 80 lbs and really really (REALLY) enjoys the outdoors. The fit was good, getting it on and off is easy and he doesn't seem to mind at all wearing it.
Construction is light. We've used it twice on two 3 hour hikes. I usually load him down with a few liters of water and some dog treats. The fabric seems pretty tear resistant, however the zippers are lightweight. Do NOT overload the bags making it necessary to force the zippers. I'm a little concerned about the durability of the zippers.
On hike #1 the "D" ring which provides a means to attach a leash broke. It didn't really 'break' but rather separated enough to pull off of the nylon strap. I was able to knot the lead to make it work and I'm going to replace the D ring with something more robust.
For the price, I'd buy this again. This is our first one, so we'll see how much we use it and then consider this when we purchase the next one.
