| Customer Reviews: Good Hiking Socks March 13, 2010 T. Smith (Petaluma, CA) Very warm, medium weight socks. These offer good cushion to pressure points on the feet when hiking or standing for long periods on hard surfaces such as working on a sales floor or construction site. It would be hard to use liner socks under these, so these are not really the best choice for backpacking unless you are on a short trip or pack light. Cuff is tight on me, but I'm short with very bulky calves. Offers a bit of a snug fit around middle of foot - not something you really notice, but I feel it lends a little arch relief compared to my other hiking socks.
Another reviewer mentioned quick wear... I find most Smartwool socks will wear a partial hole wherever abrasion occurs within a boot. If your toes move a lot when hiking and periodically scrape the sides or if your heel tends to slide inside your boot, expect the socks to wear an obvious hole. These holes are only partial, as I said - a durable checkerboard of tougher wool mesh remains. I believe this is their compromise in order to achieve comfort, overall relative durability, and breathability all in a single sock.
Best Heavy Outdoor Sock January 13, 2010 TucsonShopper (Tucson, Arizona) Everyone knows wool is the natural choice for outdoor socks due to its ability to resist moisture and odors (cotton absorbs and holds sweat making the foot sometimes hotter, sometimes colder, but always more sore and stinky). And, I was looking for a new serious hiking sock (I haved tried quite a few but have never really been happy). I previously owned Smartwool Adventurer socks and wore them with different liners. The new Smartwool PhD socks, however, offer a far better fit (but same tough merino wool used by REI, EMS, etc). So good at preventing sock rub and the resulting blisters that liners are not needed. PhD Outdoors are the most snug Smartwool made (compared to old Trekkings) and well suited to any heavy load. They are the most comfortable socks I have ever worn (dear firemen: wool won't ignite or melt like synthetics). And, they cost less than my old Adventurers. I am very happy. For more less aggessive treks, I like the lighter Smartwool PhD Outdoor Light Crew.
Toes Wearing Out Quickly! January 29, 2009 J. D. Spainhour (Trinity, North Carolina USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
LOVE the comfort and relative warmth/coolness of the sock, but just under my big toe on both sides they are wearing thin. I can see through both hole. They're good socks, just not that durable. it may have something to do with their attempt to blend as they did with this particular pair.
